The instructor qualification process

So you want to learn to drive and you need a driving instructor. For a lot of people, the first question is how cheap can I get my lessons? This is understandable but you should also consider if your instructor is QUALIFIED or NOT?

It may be hard to believe that many of the driving instructors teaching on the roads today are unqualified. The question is, why pay someone to teach you to drive and then book an unqualified instructor?

An unqualified trainee instructor will display a pink triangle shaped badge in their front wind screen.

Be aware that the term,"the instructor is licenced to give instruction" also means they are unqualified.

A qualified instructor will display a green badge on the front screen.

The qualifying process is a tough, three part exam. The first part being a 100 question theory test similar to the Learner test but harder along with a hazard perception test.

The second part is an advanced driving test. The potential instructor has just three attempts at this, if the instructor fails three times then they cannot continue to the third part. There is just a 50% pass rate at this test.

The third and final part is the hardest to pass, with just a 28% pass rate. This is the test of instructional ability. Once the instructor has passed all three parts, they are then invited to register with the DSA as an Approved Driving Instructor (Adi). They then display the green badge in the front of their teaching car.

I am pleased to say I passed all 3 parts of the ADI qualification process first time, and achieved a zero faults pass in my Part 2 test. My green badge is displayed in my windscreen at all times so rest assured you're in good hands.

I shall be attending a one day course on Tuesday 29th January for some CPD training and advice on tutoring pupils with some learning difficulties such as Autism and Deafness. This is an area that not only fascinates me (how different people learn) but is something I am looking to specialise in as an ADI. More news after the course!
